Do It Yourself Muffler Installation in a Toyota Corolla

The muffler is essential to your Corollas exhaust system, for both pollution and noise control. A fully functioning muffler is required by law. The muffler goes from the catalytic converter to the exhaust tailpipe at the rear of the car. Installing a muffler on your Corolla depends primarily on if the muffler has the tailpipe attached or not, but it is similar to installation on almost every other vehicle. The biggest difference is the lack of underneath clearance compared to larger vehicles.

Instructions

    1

Raise the rear end of your Corolla with a jack and support it on jack stands.

    2

Slip new rubber hangers onto the studs in the vicinity of the mufflers mounting location on the chassis.

    3

Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the mufflers mounting fasteners.

    4

Install the muffler into its mounting brackets and connect it to the catalytic converter -- the next component close to the front end of the vehicle -- with the mounting fasteners and a wrench.

    5

Mount the exhaust pipe -- if it is not already connected to the muffler -- and connect the exhaust pipe to the muffler with its fasteners.

    6

Fasten the muffler at the rear end to the rubber hangers with an Allen wrench.

    7

Raise your Corolla with the jack, remove the jack stands and lower it to the ground.
